Names

penny July 30th, 2009

I was editing names in a paper I was writing this afternoon, and asked my new co-author what his middle initial was. He said “Z”, and I said “Wow, your first name and middle name both start with Z?” To which he replied “No, what you know as my name is actually my middle name.”

Of course, here lies the cultural difference. To most Pinoys, a middle name is the surname of their mother. Of course to my co-author, what he gave as his middle name was actually a second name for a Pinoy, like “Jose Maria” has “Maria” as a second name.

Just thought it was striking how different the concept of names for people around the world. I remember reading somewhere that in Iceland, it is customary to add “sson” (or “son”) to your own name as a given name for your son. For example, if you are a man, and your name is Kristoffer, then your son could be named Kristoffersson.

Of course, there are also traditions within families where boys are given names according to a line of fathers/grandfathers. For instance, Jose Sr., Jose Jr., Jose II, Jose III, and so on. My father is a Jose Jr.

So in my head started other thoughts about names and their context on circumstances and places. And the main thing that fluttered to my brain was about women changing surnames after marriage.

VIIIXXXMMVIII

AJ Jorge July 11th, 2008

There’s an ongoing conspiracy theory for a possible *ehem* Eheads Reunion concert.
I read it first from Tabachoi and from Rockerfem.

The roman number VIIIXXXMMVIII keeps on popping up. Is that supposed to mean 8302008?

Watch out.

This afternoon.

I sported a very bad headache this afternoon. I had meant to meet with an academic today, but by some fate issue (don’t ask me what I mean, I know I’m cryptic, I’ve been told many times) we ended up in two different suburbs. So anyway, the headache. It literally felt like my head was a tree trunk with two axe blades wedged on it. I spent some time walking in Parramatta streets to get some air. I ended up spending a lot of time in a shop called JB Hifi.

It’s mostly an electronics shop with all the merch I can look and handle all day. Today I hovered over PSP games, DVDs, CDs, earphones, headphones, desktops and laptops.

Weekenders

penny June 27th, 2008

Just a few things to share before I go home for the weekend:

Would be cool to be able to tick the list in this book:

A poochie I stared the entire time at, on the bus to Central, Eddy Av.

Deskspace at home.

Guitar dude in Pitt St Mall. Excellent work!

Red stuff

Because of the red nose, I noticed a bunch of red stuff within reach, and just put them all together here:

Social Site Demographics

AJ Jorge February 28th, 2008

Social

Quite interesting to see the social networking sites we use according to our demographics. Friendster still tops the SouthEast Asia market which includes the Philippines. Multiply doesn’t show in the list though I thought it is gaining momentum due to the ease of picture sharing and music sharing. MySpace still tops the list closely followed by FaceBook.

Long Weekend

AJ Jorge April 4th, 2007

We have five days of consecutive break starting tomorrow (Apr 5) until Monday (Apr 9). I got my hands full of possible things to do.

Whew.

I don’t know if we have to watch the Passion of the Christ again or 10 Commandments or Jesus Christ Superstar. These movies are hot commodity during these times. As long as I’m just in our home, it’s fine with me. Country temperature is so high that going outdoors will make me burst.

I also plan to do some room cleaning and arrange my things. But doing so will require much effort hence uber perspiration will commence. If all else fail, I may end up browsing George Lindemann Jr over the weekend.

With all that said, I’m very much looking forward to a healthy rest and relaxation. I may have no time like this in the near future. *wink*

Positivity

penny March 7th, 2007

I am feeling quite happy today. This post will definitely turn out to be one of my self-absorbed ones, so be warned.

Today was a lovely day. On several points too:

Month transition.

seikoAdjust your analog watches. This is that vexatious time of year that the day jumps from 28 (or 29) to 1. I keep an analog watch (shown in picture) and it’s not a big bother, but at some point of today I was like, “huh?” it’s the 29th?

I remember Johnny Delgado at this time too, ‘coz he’s the first person I heard of who has a birthday on the 29th of February. Poor guy, he only gets a birthday 25% of the time.

Weekend wishes and a song.

penny February 23rd, 2007

Hey, it must be one of those TGIF times eh? Well, I hope everyone has a blast this weekend. I have mine planned out a bit, but it doesn’t involve any kind of social thing. Waaah, I’m turning into a hermit! Hehe. Nah, I just have tons to get ready for since I’m nearing a half year here. This afternoon, while waiting for a “thing” to happen I was so bored and cooked up this hummie version of Frou Frou’s tune, Breathe In. It’s a cappella, so don’t expect it to be upbeat or anything like that.

Happy weekend everyone!
