Da Vinci Code Brouhaha

AJ Jorge May 11th, 2006

Few sleeps left before we can see the Da Vinci Code movie. That is, if the freakin’ moralist of our country will let us watch it. Nakaka-asar lang isipin na ipagkakait sa atin ang pelikulang ito dahil lang hindi siya tugma sa paniniwala natin.

Don’t they get it? It’s a fiction for cying out loud. The more they make noise, the more the public will clamor for this movie to be shown. They are just arousing the curiousity of the public. For me, there are 3 types of people who would want to watch the movie: (1) the ones who read the book 2-3 years ago and have known the story even before a movie was announced to be made; (2) the ones who are reading the book or have recently finished the book just because a movie is to be shown; (3) all the others who did not read the book and will only watch the movie because it’s uso. Oh, I would like to add a fourth one, the ones who do not have a freakin’ clue of what the fuss is all about so they just try to ban the movie altogether. Moralists. Bleh.

Lethal Weapon Marathon

AJ Jorge March 25th, 2006

Lethal Weapon 1They started as Seargent Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Seargent Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and ended up as Captain Riggs and Captain Murtaugh. It was a blast watching the movie series again - this time consecutively and the Director’s Cut version. The classic scenes were relived once again during my marathon session. Unsurprisingly, the first movie gave me goosebumps while watching it. The first installment was released last ‘87 and I remember watching it in our trusty old betamax player. I can’t distinctly recall the plot of the story but I know the general twists and turns of the story. The Do you really wanna jump? scene is one of the highlights for me. But do you know the scene directly after that scene? Murtaugh confronted Riggs and condemned on how he handled the situation. Murtaugh gave his gun to Riggs and told him if he wanted to end his life, do it now. Now that scene was intense. You could almost sense that Riggs would never hesitate to pull the trigger and end his life just like that.

Roger Murtaugh: Okay, clown, no bullshit! You wanna kill yourself?
Martin Riggs: Oh, for Chriss-…
Roger Murtaugh: Shut up! Yes or no - you wanna die?
Martin Riggs: Oh, I got the job done! What the hell do you want?
Roger Murtaugh: JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION!
Martin Riggs: Well, what do you wanna hear, man? Do you wanna hear that sometimes I think about eatin’ a bullet? Huh? Well, I do! I even got a special bullet for the occasion with a hollow point, look! Make sure it blows the back of my goddamned head out and do the job right! Every single day I wake up and I think of a reason not to do it! Every single day! You know why I don’t do it? This is gonna make you laugh! You know why I don’t do it? The job! Doin’ the job! Now that’s the reason!

Lethal Weapon 2Lethal Weapon 3Lethal Weapon 4
Part 2 introduced Joe Pesci as Leo Getz, the annoying whistler blower of a big time money laundering South African diplomats. The duo were assigned to protect Leo at all costs which of course was translated to baby sitting the poor guy. This is the movie where Murtaugh was stuck in the toilet while taking a poo when he found out that there is a bomb beneath him. The “on three” dialogues was also first used here.

Martin Riggs: On 3, what do ya say?
Roger Murtaugh: Okay.
Martin Riggs: One… two…
Roger Murtaugh: Wait, wait, wait!
Martin Riggs: What?
Roger Murtaugh: Do we do it on three? Or one, two, three, then do it?
Martin Riggs: It’s your ass, Cochise!
Roger Murtaugh: My ass, yeah. On three.
Martin Riggs: We go on three?
Roger Murtaugh: Yeah.

Part 3 introduced Rene Russo as Lorna Cole, the love interest of Riggs. There were two memorable scenes here. One was when Riggs and Lorna are bragging about their scars acquired from the line of duty. They showed one after the other the wounds in their bodies and ended up having an intimate scene. The other scene for me was the way the big boss goon died. The big boss was driving a bulldozer towards a fallen Riggs and Riggs can’t get a clear shot of him. Murtaugh threw him a gun with a ‘cop killer’ bullet. Riggs shot through the bulldozer and killed the big boss on the process. It was probably a lame scene but somehow it was etched in my mind.

Part 4 introduced Chris Rock as Sgt. Butters and Jet Li as Wah Sing Ku. Jet Li is part of the Chinese triad and is trying to set free his four fathers. Easily, the most memorable scene here is when Leo and Butters were into a conversation regarding telephone companies trying to extort the consumers.

Lee Butters: Somebody took my phone number and called Afghanistan. Afghanistan. I’ve never talked to anyone in Afghanistan, I don’t know nobody in Afghanistan, and even if did know anyone, I wouldn’t talk to that Afghan ass for three hours. I won’t talk to my daddy for three hours.

The other is the hand to hand fight scene between Riggs, Murtaugh and Wah Sing Ku. Probably one of the best fight sequences in the whole series. The two policemen even contemplated on just walking away than facing a pissed off Jet Li. Jet Li’s performance is awesome. He said in one interview that it was the first time he played a bad guy in a movie and was very glad to have been part of the Lethal Weapon series.

All in all, after watching the whole series again, I would say that the best among the four is a toss up between one and four. It has been said time and again that nothing beats the original, but in this case, part 4 comes in so close. The franchise lived up to it’s expectation of action movie filled with comedy and witty one-liners. Danny Glover and Mel Gibson’s on screen chemistry is one of the best in the entire Hollywood films.

Hannibal, American Psycho, Batman ulit, etc.

penny October 15th, 2005

Naghalungkat at nakabili ako ng Hannibal Lecter Trilogy and Must Love Dogs. Napanuod ko na lahat uli (except Red Dragon) by now, iba talaga yung Silence of the Lambs.

Hehe.
=======
Di pa din ako makakita ng American Psycho. Napapanuod ko parati yung ending nya dati sa HBO (or Star Movies? nalimutan ko na). Kainis.

No, hindi naman ako nag-oobsess kay Bale. Mejo freak coincidence lang na hinahanap ko mga thriller-suspense movies ngayon (resolution ko yan, wag nang mag-inarte sa thriller movies, pero di ko pa din kinakaya ang The Ring Series), and at the same time inuulit-ulit ko ngayon si Batman Begins ni C. Nolan. I stumbled on this quote by Bale in looking for the Psycho details:

…. Christian Bale, on his transformation into Patrick Bateman for American Psycho (2000): “The character is so vain and obsessed with his looks. While the psychology of the character was something that I could perform, you can’t fake the physicality. Being English, I tend to enjoy going down to the pub far more than going to the gym, so it was very unnatural for me. I just had to convince myself that I loved it, which was the most difficult thing about playing this part. Working out is incredibly boring. I swear its true that the bigger your muscles get, the fewer brain cells you have. I found I had to stop thinking when I was in the gym because if I thought about it, I’d realize how ridiculous it was that I was pumping iron when I could’ve been out having a drink and a cigarette and enjoying some lunch. I did three hours a day for six weeks with a personal trainer and some time before that. I ate an awful lot during training and then almost nothing during filming.”…..

Hehehe, nakakatawa itong mga Briton na ito.

If I remember correctly, Welsh Bale was cast for Bateman (Psycho) after DiCaprio declined the role. Not being a big fan of DiCaprio, it was sort of a relief. No offense to the Leo-gals out there. He was great when he was younger (”What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” and “Growing Pains”) , malas lang kasi masyadong hyped yung Titanic.

Rewatching ‘Batman Begins’; Aristocats, etc.

penny October 13th, 2005

Ever since Ajay watched the ‘Batman Begins’ movie with me (he had seen it already that time) , I’ve been wanting to watch it over and over. The casting (sans Holmes) delighted me too much that I just had to check almost weekly if a crisp-clear bootleg was out. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman are really fun to watch in this film. I’m on my 5th run at the moment. At this rate, It is highly likely it would surpass the Nic Cage runs-and-reruns count I have so far.

I wonder if the Superman movie would have a same effect on me.
====
I recently bought ‘Reality Bites’ on original video if anyone’s interested. Si Ben Stiller pala director nun. Palibhasa nung high school Si Winona and Ethan lang ang kilala ko. hahahaha.
====
The pricetag ‘Aristocats’ (Disney) finally went down, kaya nabili ko na sya. :) I love these Disney classics. Most of the time I have the ‘101 Dalmatians’ cartoon playing in the background, now I have an alternative. Though I don’t fancy felines as much as I do canines, watching ‘Aristocats’ is the one time I love them.

Kelangan ko na ng bagong shelf. Tambak na ng videos.

DVDs Last Weekend

AJ Jorge July 20th, 2005

I was able to watch a couple of films last weekend. Here’s my list:

  • Van Wilder. Finally I was able to watch this film. I have been hunting a copy of this ever since Anthony sent me a VHS copy of this movie. Well, we don’t have a VHS player at home so the copy is still still until now. I was intrigued by this movie since it stars Ryan Reynolds which Anthony and I know from the short-lived comedy series ‘Two Guys, Girl and a Pizza Place’. Ryan Reynolds also stars in Blade Trinity. Van Wilder is a fun movie. One of those no-brainer comedy flicks.
  • Hitch. Kung wala lang GF si Gerald, highly recommended ‘to sa kanya. You’ll learn the moves in this movie. Not a pa-kilig movie but more on doing the right thing at the right time with the right person. ;)
  • Madagascar. 3D animation. Not that great. It will kill some time though. Chris Rock’s voice is very prominent in the whole movie while that of David Schwimmer is not. Story is okay but it lacks substance for me. I’m now looking for Racing Stripes copy to make a comparison between the two.
  • Last last week’s flicks:

  • Stand by me. A ’90’s movie starring River Phoenix, Jerry O’Connel, Keifer Sutherland. Nice drama movie about young boys’ adventure and friendship. It’s nice but I don’t think I can watch it again. Not in the near future anyway.
  • Fight Club. ’stig. Nice twist in the story. Definitely would watch it again.
  • New Police Story. Jacky Chan. ‘Nuff said.

I still have a lot to catch up with the growing lists of DVD title we have at home.

The Incredibles vs. The Fantastic Four

AJ Jorge July 10th, 2005

Pen and I were able to watch the Fantastic Four movie last Friday at Glorietta4 last Friday.

On the way out of the moviehouse, I blurted out that it would be great to see a crossover between the Incredibles and the Fantastic Four.

Imagine:
Mr. Incredible vs. The Thing
Mrs. Incredible (ElastiGirl) vs. Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards)
Violet vs. Invisible Girl (Sue Storm)
Dash vs. Human Torch (Johnny Storm) - the pairing is a little off but there’s no one else to match.

This would be a great showdown between two super-families. Mr. Incredible and The Thing will have a slugfest. Elastigirl and Mr. Fantastic’s fight will be stretched ’til the end (pardon the pun). Violet and Dash will put up a good fight versus Invisible Girl and Human Torch but will ultimately lose. The 2 kids cannot handle 2 grownups. Then when the Incredibles are down, a main villain will show up. This main villain is the reason why the 2 super-families

fought. The super-families have no choice but to team up and beat the main villain. Add some other twists and turns and funnly one-liners and this movie will be a hit. Nice eh?

Crossovers are great. It is a dream come true for every fanboy. You get to see 2 unlikely persons/teams in one storyline. It’s been done a countless of times in comic books but I have yet to see one in movies.

Imagine James Bond and Triple X. Indiana Jones and Lara Croft. Blade and Van Helsing. Bad Boys and Charlie’s Angels. Wow. I’m actually smiling while typing this. These are great characters and making a crossover between them will surely be a box office wonder.

It’s just that making these kinds of movies are too costly. And copyrights will have to be ironed out properly. Not to mention the right script so that one character will not be overshadowed by the other.

Now I can’t wait if they will make a Superman/Batman movie.
