In a week’s time, I’ll be spending my first birthday away from the familiar… And with Cecillia, I can relate…

That strip above is just all too true for me at the moment. I’m working on 2 papers at the moment… and it is a bit of a hurdle…

I’m having an uneventful night. Supposed to be working I can’t seem to get any juices flowing [I'm supposed to be drafting a couple of papers], that I just decided “to hell with it” for now, and just relax for a bit. So I thought some loosened screws can be tightened up by blabbing a bit of nonsense.
Ok so what to blabber about then? Hmmm…
Doing, yet again, one of my usual hodge-podge storytelling, that which comprises the Pur of the SilPur life.

No pictures. It slipped my mind totally. Sigh. Oh well, but I guess telling the story instead isn’t so bad.
We had a late lunch at the Royal Hotel (La Cucina), which is 2 blocks from the Uni. The food was great and the atmosphere wasn’t so bad. I wish I had taken pictures of the food, the plates were humungous! We had a bottle of red wine, different pasta and meat… (gawsh I can’t even remember what they’re called anymore…)
Anyhow… I realise I’m not cut out doing a post right now… I’m so conked out…
Silly ranting follows.

(Geek speak alert)
Checks, one of the Honours students in our lab, is setting up a server for us. Ever since he set up an account for everyone, I was playing around with the space provided. My brain is cobwebbed with html so I whipped that up pretty quickly. Anyhow, the fun part was learning how to connect remotely to the host, and using this ridiculously barebone internet browser called “lynx” (screen capture shown here courtesy of wikipedia). Browsing the worldwide web with text… how crazy is that? Mark wanted the server stripped as much as possible, and one way to do that was to not have an X server. That meant having purely command line interfaces with this machine and no “GUI” whatsoever. I spent a considerable time goofing around with this browser, forgetting that Firefox will cut my troubles tenfold. I do scare myself most of times.
==============================
Which brings me to rave now about another thing. I found the lab machine naming scheme so cool: each machine is called by the name of a classic thinker, like Thales, Parmenides, Democritus, etc. When I first came I could not help but look up the names of those I have not heard of (Archytas, Heraclitus, Zeno, Leucippus). What personification.
“So how’s Parmenides going?”
“He’s not too bad, thanks.”

May as well bring on the pictures eh? Here was me at work today.

Did my best to pose for a cause. There is this mentoring program that the school is sponsoring for talented kids from Moriah College (a Jewish school, I heard) where kids from year 9-10 (about 11 or 12 years old if I remember correctly?) will have an opportunity to “do research” in an actual lab setting.
So this picture was for the profile they asked. Whew, daming sinabi ano? Seuge way ba.

Ok, now I am feeling the evolution of the lab. This is now generation TWO of the Tanaka group since I arrived in September of last year.

Mark, Fabio, Pen, Checks, Ali and Shamin.
I am no longer the newest member of the lab. Wow. How fast time is.
