Choco L’Art

August 22nd, 2008

cakePen brought me to this specialty chocolate boutique in Sydney called Choco L’Art. As we all know, Pen is such an aficionado of anything chocolate (well, goya and the like is not on her top of the list). It is literally a haven for people with sweet tooth. And the chocs do taste yummy!

Pen ordered a cup of hot chocolate for me, which was a welcome during those cold days, and a serving of tiny chocolate ice cream cake. It was such a delight savoring each tiny bite.

The presentation is not to be missed. I had a tall cup of hot chocolate with milky foam on top. The chocolate in it (as I was told) was melted and was on the bottom of the cup so I have to mix it at once or it will harden. We had the tiny cake which we shared. It was enough for us that time as we just finished lunch somewhere. And that piece of kisses-like chocolate was free I think.

That swishy line of chocolate covering the strawberry hardened after some time so we have to scrape it off the plate. Sayang naman kasi kung iwan namin! Durog-durog na tuloy yung presentation after we left.

Me and Pen enjoying the desert. Sino mas nag-eenjoy? Hehe.

Cookies

June 12th, 2008

Ever since we had an oven in the condo, I thought of baking cookies. I initially wanted to try out those ready-made batter/mixture where you only need to add eggs and mix it up. But Pen persuaded me to bake one from scratch – flour, eggs, butter and sugar.

I started with the simplest of them all: butter cookies. The very first try was not that bad. It was still edible. After some time, I baked another batches. The second and third tries were awful though. They were either burnt or hard or both! Mustering up enough courage and self-esteem, I made 4th and 5th tries in a span of 3 months I think. They are getting better and better.

Just last week, I made the 6th and very recent try. I made careful adjustments with the measurements and time to bake. I diligently watched the cookies bake unlike before where I just left them to bake (and burn!). And I’m quite proud with this one. Quite proud that I wanted a souvenir and snapped some pictures. :D

My very own version of chocolate chip cookies!

Today’s menu.

March 11th, 2008

Today I thought I’d try a different approach to food, and only eat when I’m really hungry. I remember my father telling me to treat food as medicine. Listen to your body, and don’t overindulge.

8 a.m. Weet-bix biscuits and lactose-free milk. (2 biscuits and half a cup of milk) Weet-bix is an australian brand of cereal that consists of flaky rectangular biscuits that are made out of whole wheat grain. Lactose-free milk pretty much tastes like regular milk, which is good coz I love milk!!

10 a.m. 1 Yellow Nectarine. A nectarine is a fruit from the peach family. Like the peach, it is like a soft apple.

12 nn Corn on the cob. I love corn =)

12.35 p.m. Green salad: Rocket leaves, coral cabbage, spinach, tuna, olive oil and a little cheese. I was not a fan of rocket for the longest time. But when I ate it hungrily today, it tasted so good!

5.35 p.m Strawberries. Yum.

I’m feeling pretty light and perky. It’s still the late afternoon, so I might still eat a salad tonight.

Burning off treats

March 10th, 2008

I gave myself a break last Friday and rewarded myself for all the “good deeds” I’ve done for the week. A bag of M&M plain chocolates. Now, it turns out I need to walk 53 minutes to burn them off. Geez.

Walking and eating to a better well-being

March 10th, 2008

Yes, no secrets about age, we’re almost thirty now. To me, this means I need more conviction in my life. One thing I have very little conviction of is the way I take care of my body. I have never been seriously conscious about my diet and physical activity until recently. I mean, I do take care of myself to some extent for better health, but I don’t really pay close attention to what I eat and what I do. Now that I’m about to hit the big 3-0, as most of my friends will in the next year or two (if they hadn’t already), I seriously feel the need now to rethink my life habits in general. Especially since I’ve gained so much weight (ooooh you wouldn’t believe) and it never seems to come off. It kinda got me frustrated at myself, so I really need to get my act back together.

So, an aspect where I would like to begin my changes is my general well-being. And I thought, walking might be my first step in this new resolve.

I’ve kickstarted a walking regimen recently, and I’ve been going at it for the past 2 weeks now.

So for the entire work-week (Mondays through Fridays) I get to do:

1. at least one hour a day of brisk walking, with about 10 minutes of continuous stairclimbing,
2. some amount of leisurely walking that take at least 15 minutes a day, and
3. light weightlifting (groceries!) one day a week, carried across a good 1-km hike.

I take the stairs instead of lifts (elevators) and take brief walks with co-lab members.

I’ve revamped my fridge components to fresh fruit and veggies. Processed food are now limited to canned fish (sardines and/or tuna) and a little cheese and lactose-free (very important, as I am soooo lactose intolerant!) milk. No soda. Meat consumption is all chicken and fish.

My usual recipe for a hearty meal is chicken and vegetables, roasted with olive oil and vinegar. Or there is the baked fish and veggies squeezed with lime or lemon. Veggies are often eggplant, peppers, potatoes and tomatoes. A snack is a serving of fruit or a handful of nuts. I still sneak in the occasional skyflakes with nutella, but I am slowly getting rid of that habit. It takes a bit of getting used to… but like I said in a much earlier post, it’s all about getting your tongue in line with what’s around.

Now that my two weeks have passed, I’ve shed a couple of kilos. Let’s see how I fare in the weeks to come.

One thing I am worried about is being in Manila after Easter… I’m surely going to have a hard time NOT eating what’s in the house in Laguna =) Well, everything in moderation… that would be the key. I hope I do fine. Wish me luck!

Getting accustomed to food.

February 1st, 2008

I thought about posting some of my usual nonsense about food when I had a 6dollar lunch today. It consisted of a muffin, poppy seeds and apricot, really yummy =) and an juice drink (banana + mango). I was so happy with it that I thought, how am I surviving on such a small lunch, when I ate heaps of food in UP, morning noon and night?

Since 3 years ago, my diet has been dynamically evolving. And not in a very haphazard manner too. My father told me once that it isn’t good to be too picky with food. Also that, wherever you go, it is a good practice to get your tongue accustomed to the taste of the place you are in, so you don’t get miserable with missing food you are accustomed to.

This is actually good advice now that I think of it. Though here in Sydney, it’s not too bad to get accustomed with food since you have lots of choices anyway. Most of the time you can find what you want or crave, and if it gets tricky you can always improvise with local vegetables to whip up a Filipino dish.

I wanted to share how it has been for me these couple of years. I usually adjust my food habits to the people around me, as I can eat almost anything anyway. So I went through several phases now.
