Netbook race.

penny September 17th, 2008

What’s a netbook? Put simply, it’s one of those micro-notebooks that weigh less than 2 kilos (or even <1 kg) that have been coming out recently. This ongoing race to being the best netbook is really dizzying. I've had my eye on the ASUS eeePC for the longest time since the early models (e.g. 701) came out. It wasn't too appealing at first, but when I lifted it in the shop first time I saw it, I was so surprised at how light it was. Lugging around > 2kg suddenly felt really tiring. The most recent member of the eee family is the 1000H. At 1.45kg, it’s really handy to carry, and with 8hrs of battery life, that is NO fail at ALL! Still a bit pricey for me taste at almost A$700, with 2GB RAM and 80GB HDD.

Danger looms when you keep your eye too close to a specific brand. There are a lot of other netbooks by Dell (E), MSI (Wind), etc… I haven’t had the time to look at everything.

The MacBook Air is very sexy, but it fails with its price. At almost A$4000 it is an EPIC fail. Unless I choose to give up food for the next year.

Anyhow, just throwing these thoughts to the universe. I still haven’t found an excuse to get a netbook. My laptop works fine, all 2.38 kilos of it. Sure, I had been whinging about it coming with Vista, and after a year I’ve grown used to it. I don’t see the need to have to reformat anything at the moment yet… (though I came reaaaally close, and Ajay even went as far as to send me an installer for XP) coz it seems to be working fine. Plus all my precious work for my thesis are currently on track. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken right? So at the moment, the laptop suits me fine.

Wouldn’t mind a netbook though, if it’s super cheap, or free.

Screen frenzy

penny July 3rd, 2008

Someone should invent a laptop with multiscreens. Folded into a wallet-sized store-away.

This afternoon.

penny July 2nd, 2008

I sported a very bad headache this afternoon. I had meant to meet with an academic today, but by some fate issue (don’t ask me what I mean, I know I’m cryptic, I’ve been told many times) we ended up in two different suburbs. So anyway, the headache. It literally felt like my head was a tree trunk with two axe blades wedged on it. I spent some time walking in Parramatta streets to get some air. I ended up spending a lot of time in a shop called JB Hifi.

It’s mostly an electronics shop with all the merch I can look and handle all day. Today I hovered over PSP games, DVDs, CDs, earphones, headphones, desktops and laptops.

PinoyPC 6th Anniversary

AJ Jorge December 19th, 2006

It’s been awhile since my last entry here in janep. The past few weeks were loaded with activities and parties. Two weeks before Christmas and I already had 6 parties slash events that I attended. Of the 6, only 2 are non-liquor events and the other 4 were flowing with San Mig Lights and hard drinks. Let me just highlight some of them here in Janep.

Ubuntu ni AJ

AJ Jorge November 27th, 2006

I was able to install my Ubuntu 6.10 in my PC at home. It was actually just a test installation using my spare hard disk so as not to touch my existing stable WinXP machine.

Nainggit ako kay Pen nung na-install nya yung Ubuntu nya sa laptop nya. Dagdag pa dun yung raves para sa bagong release na Ubuntu 6.10 at Vista killer pa daw ito.

Then and there, I’m sold with Ubuntu.

Having no background at all with Ubuntu, I googled away last Friday for some tips and tricks of the trade. And all reviews echoed one thing: Installation is easy. And yes it’s true.

Though I did not use an Ubuntu 6.10 install disk, it is not actually an issue. I used Linux Mint 2.0 which is based on Ubuntu 6.10 with added media codecs. Installation went fine and I can even see my Windows partition or what we know as Drive C:\.

Fraleigh ang pangalan ng Ubuntu PC ni Pen, ang sa akin naman ay…. ;)

Here’s a cool Wiki for Edgy Eft.

Since Pen installed her Ubuntu in her laptop last week, I was researching for other distributions of Ubuntu. I learned that Ubuntu 6.10, code named Edgy Eft has been released just this month. Ubuntu 6.10 uses the GNOME Desktop environment. For those who wants the KDE flavor, they have the KUbuntu distribution. As for me, I looked for a package that will satisfy my video viewing needs. Then I found out the LinuxMint Distribution. I definitely think that this distro is for me.

mint Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java, and other components. Linux Mint 2.0, code name “Barbara”, was released yesterday: “This release is based on Ubuntu 6.10 and uses the Ubuntu installer. The desktop is GNOME 2.16.1 and the kernel is 2.6.17. Barbara comes with the following plugins: Macromedia Flash 9 beta, Sun Java 1.5 Update 9, RealPlayer 10. Support for MP3, Windows and various codecs, encrypted DVDs is installed by default. Barbara comes with Amarok 1.4.4 instead of Rhythmbox. The default artwork is a blue version of the ‘Human’ theme.”

I’m downloading the iso file as I write this and I can’t wait to install it in my computer at home.

Computer Technician Wannabe

AJ Jorge June 7th, 2006

Last Saturday I was at Pen’s house in Laguna attempting to revive their PC. We have come into conclusion that their motherboard was the problem beforehand so I brought with me a spare Socket A motherboard lying in my room.

That was my first time to actually replace a motherboard but I was pretty much confident that I can do the switch.

Another Gadget

AJ Jorge May 23rd, 2006

When I bought my USB closure sometime last year, it was to make my extra hard disk drive portable and make it my file storage to and from office. Then when I bought the DVD Writer, hard disk was booted out of the enclosure to make way for my DVD Writer.

At first I was ready to make an extra step if I want to use the hard disk rather than the writer or the writer rather than the hard disk. Unscrew the enclosure, fit the hdd or writer then plug to the pc. Do the same step if I want to use the other one.

Bah.

I had enough.

Found this thing at TipidPC and bought 2 sets.
usb to ide connector

It’s pretty much bare but it serves its purpose. No more swapping of DVD writer and hard disk. I bought 2 sets because the price was a steal. The items were brand new and I can easily sell one set to anyone.

IDE slot of the hard disk connects to the usb port of the PC. It has to be plugged to an outlet to power up the connected device. And more importantly, I can simultaneously connect the extra hard disk along with the DVD Writer.

Now back to file transferring.
