Sydney City streets

January 7th, 2008

The city circle streets: We walked from St James Station to David Jones, and to Martin Place (where the fountain and city christmas tree is), past Queen Victoria Building (QVB) near Town Hall, to Darling Harbour, through to Sussex Street, stopped for Maccers (McDonalds) and back to Hyde Park. This walk was all because we had time to kill before the mass in St Mary’s Cathedral.

After the mass, we followed the World Youth Cross procession to Hyde Park, and stuck around for a while listening to christmas carols. Ajay took photos of the tiny Catholic crowd that gathered.

Sydney Jumps

January 7th, 2008

Why bunjee when you can simply jump? Ajay does not simply traipse around Sydney and its suburbs, but puts an exclamation point in each landmark by springing up as high as he could.

The large metal ball in UNSW in Kensington, Martin Place, near the War Memorial in Southern end of Hyde Park, St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Opera House, the Sydney Cityscape, the Harbour Bridge, Circular Quay towards Opera House, Coogee Park near the beach, Kensington Park, and finally in front of our apartment building.

Sydney BridgeClimb

January 7th, 2008

You gotta do it at least once.

We climbed with a young group from England and a dude from Greece. Our climb leader was Dave, a 22-yr old uni student who was extremely cynical. And like he said, I’m not sure about comparing this climb with an Everest Climb. That’s just ridiculous.

Sydney Aquarium

January 7th, 2008

There’s a lot to learn and enjoy in the Aquarium. Surprisingly, it was really crowded the day we went. Quite funny too to meet my supervisor there with his family. Nevertheless, we enjoyed what was inside. It was really difficult taking pictures here obviously. But here are some of our best tries.

Aside from the famous nemo characters, there were these huge catfish in the first few tanks. Also, a boisterous group of seals (might upload my videos of this soon in youtube), scarily huge sharks and dugongs.

Sydney Shooter

January 7th, 2008

So how do you get that desired angle? You’d have to twist and contort your arms, face, torso and whatever else to get the shot you want! In this collage, Ajay visits the University of New South Wales, Bennelong point*, Sydney Aquarium, Martin Place**, the Opera House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Mrs Macquaries Chair***, Pylon Lookout, and the walk (hike) from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach!

Leftover holiday cheer.

January 6th, 2008

Here’s looking forward to all the best for everyone this year, and the next!

This christmas tree in this photo is located on the South end of Hyde Park in the city of Sydney.

Australian Capital Territory

December 15th, 2007

Over the past week I was in Canberra for a workshop in the Australian National University. I sneaked out for a few hours to see the inside of the Australian War Memorial, probably the only place I failed to visit last year when I went to visit Joy in September for Floriade.

I’m still a bit wiped out so I might just procastinate the posting and picture uploading for later… Putting up this post as a reminder to myself.

Flying to NZ

June 14th, 2007

Pen will be going to Christchurch, New Zealand from 16-20th for a conference talk.

Evolution 2007

As this is the first time this prestigious scientific meeting has been held outside USA/Canada, the local organising committee is determined to ensure that Evolution 2007 provides the ideal forum for the presentation and exchange of scientific information while offering delegates a unique and enjoyable New Zealand experience. The meeting will be held in the purpose built Christchurch Convention Centre, acknowledged as one of the best conference facilities in New Zealand. It is located in the central city area and a range of accommodation options has been selected for this meeting, all within a few minutes walk from the convention centre.

Pen will be giving a talk under the Molecular Evolution category on Monday, June 18th.

Good luck Pen!

Have a safe trip!

Abseiling.

April 28th, 2007

I now know how much I love hot showers.

I went home stinking from the bush without the slightest effort of cleaning myself. For some stramge reason I decided I wouldn’t change clothes and just savor the filth as long as I could. No one seemed to care though, not in the train nor bus.

So why was I filthy you ask? Yep, the title of the post says it: I went abseiling. More commonly “rappelling” to Pinoys. Checks convinced me yesterday morning to tag along with him, Richard and Danny to go caving in Bungonia. So we drove up (or should I say down?) bright and early but had to detour to Nattai instead for a decent abseil spot. (more details in a later post, it’s quite complicated.)

By some grace of God, I am still alive. With a noble enough gash on an elbow and scratches in the knees and an arm.

pants

That’s a photo of my pant leg, taken from my low-res camera phone on the train ride home to Sydney. By this time the muddy moss on my knees have dried, so they’ve faded in color. Earlier on it looked much nastier. And my shoes…

shoe

They’re banged up pretty well from the bushwalk and climbing. It rained while we were up, and with nowhere to take cover everything I had on got wet obviously. And, of course, the wet outdoors is never squeaky clean!

I didn’t bring a camera since Checks had one anyway. Soon as he has his pics up, I’ll be sure to grab them and put them up here.

So until then, I’ll leave the story at that. It doesn’t sound too exciting, but it was a marvelous Saturday.
========================
On a different stroke right here, Ajay is flying to Singapore tomorrow. Well wishes to him and I pray he is safe always. Take care sweetie. *Happy thoughts* =)
