Bamboo @ Singapore

AJ Jorge September 3rd, 2008

I finally managed to upload pictures taken from the Bamboo Concert.

As expected, Bamboo was a high energy performer. He easily got the crowd to sing and jump with him.
Bamboo

They were on stage for about an hour and sang the songs below:
Playlist
plus 2 encores: the second to the last song escapes me at the moment but the last one was “Masaya”.

They opened up with “Probinsyana” - which, if I’m not mistaken, is their latest hit. Surprisingly, they sang 5 Rivermaya songs: Elesi, Ulan, Kisapmata, 214 and Awit ng Kabataan. Not that I don’t like the songs, but I think they should have stuck with their own songs. No complains though. This is the first time I’ve watched Bamboo live and he can sing whichever song he like and I’ll still listen. Hearing those ‘old’ songs bring heart warming feelings that definitely put a smile on my face.

I was in front of Ira Cruz the whole time while Bamboo was hovering in the center stage.

I know it’s not Christmas… yet.

penny July 9th, 2008

If it was, then there’ll be 2 days before our wedding in the Philippines =) But well… that was a tangent. Let me get back to what I wanted to post about.

I was on an emo trip last night after spending 3 hours on the train from Newcastle, listening to music. I had a bunch of stuff to read with me, and even games to play to keep me busy on the trip. But, I still ended up just listening to songs. In my device I had songs like Kanlungan, Noypi, Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo, even Biyahe Tayo. Whilst staring out at the superb sunset in the Central Coast, I was tearful at powerful lyrics, I didn’t care to cry then coz there wasn’t much people in the train anyway hehe. When I got home I was yearning to hear some other songs that struck a chord in me, years ago. I ended up digging through youtube for other All-star recordings like Voices that Care, We are the World and Do they know it’s Christmas.

Voices that Care was released in 1991 during the Persian Gulf crisis. We are the World, by United Artists for Africa in 1985, and also Do they know its Christmas in 1984 (which came out before We are the world) by distinct British/Irish artists during the famine in Ethiopia.

It was enjoyable to watch the videos. There are quite a number of “the making” videos that were also fun to watch. “The making” videos:
We are the world
Voices that Care (Part 1)

The best of them in my opinion is Do they know it’s Christmas. The lyrics were much more fresh, and much less dated. Though yes, it’s a Christmas song aimed towards a specific cause. [warning --- this turns out to be a very groupie-like schoolgirl tone] And may I say, the most that I got a kick out of was seeing those British acts looking really young and dashing! This afternoon.

penny July 2nd, 2008

I sported a very bad headache this afternoon. I had meant to meet with an academic today, but by some fate issue (don’t ask me what I mean, I know I’m cryptic, I’ve been told many times) we ended up in two different suburbs. So anyway, the headache. It literally felt like my head was a tree trunk with two axe blades wedged on it. I spent some time walking in Parramatta streets to get some air. I ended up spending a lot of time in a shop called JB Hifi.

It’s mostly an electronics shop with all the merch I can look and handle all day. Today I hovered over PSP games, DVDs, CDs, earphones, headphones, desktops and laptops.

Debbie Gibson

AJ Jorge May 20th, 2008

For some reason, I am listening to Debbie Gibson songs this very moment. I have no idea why.
Debbie Gibson

Electric Youth is blaring in my earphones.
Feel the power see the energy
the future only belongs, in the hands of itself
and the future is electric youth!

Pen: pigtails and short skirt
Pen: cleavage
Pen: screaming sex na agad e

Well, after a few google searches, found out the Debbie did posed for Playboy. Sites are blocked in the office. Tignan ko mamaya sa bahay kung totoo.

Eraserheads Lives!

AJ Jorge March 2nd, 2008

Sometime ago I blogged about a possible Eheads reunion. I was one of those kids wishing for a comeback or a reunion gig. Now it seems that it is not possible because all four of them has his own thing going on.
Ely has his Pupil, Raimond has Cambio and <S>andwich among others, Buddy is with THE Dawn and Marcus has Surfernando.
The most we could do (as what I personally did), get ALL their respective albums and make a playlist out of it! Well excepts for Buddy’s, all has an ‘Eheads Certified’ stamp on it.
Why ask for a reunion when we could get four times from the four of them playing separately. Tabachoi made his own playlist. Here’s mine:

More musical blabber.

penny November 4th, 2007

It’s interesting how my ear catches a tune in the radio, and I have to find out who is singing, so I can get it playing on my own time. It’s very rare that you find out AFTER hearing the tune, so I try to catch a good length of lyrics so I can do a quick Google search. I love the internet.

After which I’d be able to find a copy online, and if I love the tune I’d hunt the album, then other works by the artist.

I thought I’d share some of my thoughts about my latest finds. Some songs mentioned here are uploaded in my Multiply site [if they're not there yet, i might put them up in the future].

The Cat Empire. This is an Australian alternative band from Melbourne. I’ve heard my friend Malu rave about them ever since I’ve known her. I happened too see them do an unplugged special on TV some weeks ago, and they are fantastic! They are kind of like a ska, swing, jazz rock band, heavily seasoned with Latin influence, in my opinion. I have all of their three albums now, and I like listening to them when I’m in need for a pick-me-up. My favorite would have to be the album So Many Nights.

Fat Freddy’s Drop. A New Zealand band I heard about from friend Shamin. They are great to hear to mellow out without getting droopy-eyed. [They had a gig last night here in Sydney, and was invited to come see it. But seeing I am feeling somewhat impoverished at the moment, no fancy events for me yet =P]

Damien Rice. First heard the song Delicate by this American singer, played in the House MD soundtrack. I have got to be enamored with the songs by Damien Rice the most at the present time. They are simply divine. I don’t know what it is, but even with not much instruments, the bravado just blows me away. I would have to say, I mostly play his song Cannonball to cheer myself up. Listen to it. It’s a great song.

Audio: Pupil - Wildlife

AJ Jorge September 28th, 2007

I just got hold of Pupil’s sophomore album - Wildlife.

Pupil - Wildlife

It’s currently playing in my iPod as I write this entry. Cannot give a review about it yet as this is just her maiden voyage in my ears so to speak. No matter how much I try to distinguish the sound from the Eheads of yesteryears, I can’t help but think that I am still hearing the heart and soul of Eheads. No disrespect meant for Pupil members - Yan Yuzon, Dok Sergio and their new drummer Wendell Garcia. It’s just that Ely Buendia trademarked a certain pitch and sound in my ears.

Hearing the sound fragments of Eheads’ members in their respective different albums, how I wish that they’ll do an encore of sorts. Fans of Eheads like me will have to cope what we have now. I’m just glad that the fab3 (Marcus is busy surfing in La Union last I heard) are still out there in the music scene and giving fans their money’s worth.

Linkin Park: Minutes to Midnight

AJ Jorge May 26th, 2007

Been listening to Linkin Park’s newest album - Minutes to Midnight for a week now.

Minutes to Midnight

I can’t shrug off the fact that the album is relatively tame compared to their first two albums. I miss Chester’s ear popping shouts and loud vocals. Mike Shinoda’s rap is more relaxed and pleasant. Not that I’m dissing the album. It’s just that it’s not the Linkin Park trademark that I know.

There are mixed reactions to this album. Some like it while others completely trash it. I don’t complain though. Out of the 12 tracks, I probably like 7 or 8 songs. Unlike in the previous albums where I can’t get enough of their songs and I still want more.

I think I may have to listen more to grasp all there is to it in this album.

Special mention to the tracks that I like:
Bleed It Out - Chester nails this one. Chester sings the chorus and Mike raps the rest. Great song. I hope this will be their next single. I bleed it out digging deeper just to throw it away…

What I’ve Done - Linkin Park summarizes their transformation from the loud punk rock band from before to a pleasant sounding one. This track is their carrier single.

Joe (Hahn) came up to Mike and me and asked us to take the whole idea of Minutes to Midnight and apply that to how the band has changed. So, in a way, it’s us saying goodbye to how we used to be…The lyrics in the first verse are ‘In this farewell, there’s no blood, there’s no alibi,’ and right away, you’ll notice that the band sounds different: The drums are much more raw, the guitars are more raw and the vocals aren’t tripled. It’s just us out there … and that’s how Rick wanted it. - Chester Bennington, March 2007

Shadow of the Day - great lyrics and Mike and Chester yet again blends great.

I’m tired to nitpick the whole album. The above three tracks are those songs when I turn the iPod’s volume up and completely enjoy listening to them.

Needless to say, Minutes to Midnight is a really different Linkin Park sound. You will either hate it or embrace the new phase of Linkin Park.

Bamboo We Stand Alone Together

AJ Jorge April 9th, 2007

bambooI bought the new Bamboo album We Stand Alone Together last Black Saturday (yups, I was malling during that time haha). Shari already did a take on their released single Tatsulok which is a remake of Buklod’s version (check out her site for it is full of counter-analysis of the song). I already have Bamboo’s first two albums and buying the third one is a no-brainer. The album is a rendition of cult-classic songs from different music eras/generations. I especially like their version of Pearl Jam’s Alive.

The album consists of 2 cds for a bargain price of 299 pesos. I already copied the songs in my iPod and is now my favorite album in my current roster. I could have easily downloaded an mp3 copy somewhere in the web but I support OPM artists. Buy an original copy and you won’t regret it.

Tracks included in the album are (and as popularized by):
1. Probinsyana - Anak Bayan
2. Feelin’ Alright - Joe Cocker
3. So Far Away - Carole King
4. Alive - Pearl Jam
5. 50 Ways to Leave your Lover - Paul Simon
6. Prayer for the Dying - Seal
7. Umagang Kay Ganda - Pops Fernandez (winner of Metro Manila Pop Music Festival winner in 1979)
8. Tatsulok - Buklod

Bamboo

The band is somewhat receiving a flak for their 3rd album because it doesn’t contain any original material. The band just shrugged it off and says it is part of their journey.

Mabuhay kayo Bamboo. Ipagpatuloy nyo ang paggawa ng magandang musikang Pinoy.
