Bamboo @ Singapore

September 3rd, 2008

I finally managed to upload pictures taken from the Bamboo Concert.

As expected, Bamboo was a high energy performer. He easily got the crowd to sing and jump with him.

They were on stage for about an hour and sang the songs below:
Playlist
plus 2 encores: the second to the last song escapes me at the moment but the last one was “Masaya”.

They opened up with “Probinsyana” – which, if I’m not mistaken, is their latest hit. Surprisingly, they sang 5 Rivermaya songs: Elesi, Ulan, Kisapmata, 214 and Awit ng Kabataan. Not that I don’t like the songs, but I think they should have stuck with their own songs. No complains though. This is the first time I’ve watched Bamboo live and he can sing whichever song he like and I’ll still listen. Hearing those ‘old’ songs bring heart warming feelings that definitely put a smile on my face.

I was in front of Ira Cruz the whole time while Bamboo was hovering in the center stage.

I know it’s not Christmas… yet.

July 9th, 2008

If it was, then there’ll be 2 days before our wedding in the Philippines =) But well… that was a tangent. Let me get back to what I wanted to post about.

I was on an emo trip last night after spending 3 hours on the train from Newcastle, listening to music. I had a bunch of stuff to read with me, and even games to play to keep me busy on the trip. But, I still ended up just listening to songs. In my device I had songs like Kanlungan, Noypi, Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo, even Biyahe Tayo. Whilst staring out at the superb sunset in the Central Coast, I was tearful at powerful lyrics, I didn’t care to cry then coz there wasn’t much people in the train anyway hehe. When I got home I was yearning to hear some other songs that struck a chord in me, years ago. I ended up digging through youtube for other All-star recordings like Voices that Care, We are the World and Do they know it’s Christmas.

Voices that Care was released in 1991 during the Persian Gulf crisis. We are the World, by United Artists for Africa in 1985, and also Do they know its Christmas in 1984 (which came out before We are the world) by distinct British/Irish artists during the famine in Ethiopia.

It was enjoyable to watch the videos. There are quite a number of “the making” videos that were also fun to watch. “The making” videos:
We are the world
Voices that Care (Part 1)

The best of them in my opinion is Do they know it’s Christmas. The lyrics were much more fresh, and much less dated. Though yes, it’s a Christmas song aimed towards a specific cause. [warning --- this turns out to be a very groupie-like schoolgirl tone] And may I say, the most that I got a kick out of was seeing those British acts looking really young and dashing! Pillbox ng Eraserheads

June 5th, 2008

Pen and I were just chatting a while ago regarding the rare magazine publication of Eraserheads during their heydays. I am quite sure that I have both copies back at home. I remember myself going from one mall to another just to get a copy of their first magazine. I went to Sta. Lucia East, SM Cubao, SM North, SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria and eventually ended up buying in one stall in Ali Mall.

Googling around, I found the exact magazines in PDF versions! Thank you for the kind soul who made this possible. This may be the chance for you guys out there to read the magazine!

Issue Number 1
Pillbox 1

Issue Number 3 (but it is really 2! they just intentionally numbered this to 3)
Pillbox 3

Debbie Gibson

May 20th, 2008

For some reason, I am listening to Debbie Gibson songs this very moment. I have no idea why.
Debbie Gibson

Electric Youth is blaring in my earphones.
Feel the power see the energy
the future only belongs, in the hands of itself
and the future is electric youth!

Pen: pigtails and short skirt
Pen: cleavage
Pen: screaming sex na agad e

Well, after a few google searches, found out the Debbie did posed for Playboy. Sites are blocked in the office. Tignan ko mamaya sa bahay kung totoo.

Natalie Gauci

March 15th, 2008

I was rooting for another contestant, Matt, at the time of Aussie Idol 2007. The other finalist, Natalie, won.

Here’s a video of her winning single.

Kinda catchy.

Ryan Reynolds.

February 2nd, 2008

bergAjay got me back to watching the 90s TV series “Two Guys and a Girl”, and hence reminded me about Ryan Reynolds, the Canadian actor who played ‘Berg’ in the show. Since I finished watching the 3 seasons the past week, I looked him up wondering what this actor is up to at the present time. I read somewhere he’s in talks to play The Flash… anyone confirm this?

Anyhow, I also came across some writing from Reynolds. A nice, funny piece of light reading… enjoy!

the 90s brat pack

January 21st, 2008

Ok, I’m too nuts about actors.

Some time ago I featured John Cusack in this blog as part of a group of actors in the 80s (the likes of Kevin Bacon, Emilio Estevez) who were the ‘it’ crowd, especially to teens and tweeners at that time. I then thought, who are those guys analogous to them in the 90s? They were the guys I distinctly remember as the ones I always wanted to see in movies, and ridiculously believed I can somehow blow a wishing flower to wherever they were. And wish what? What else but for them to come from far away to sweep me off my teenage feet, i.e., Prince Charmings. Well… not all of them, maybe just Ethan Hawke and Noah Wyle hehe. Anyhow, it was fun seeing them then, and quite interesting to see them in some projects today.

This is as much a list that I can come up with now. With their names I put down my favorite appearances in the 90s and more recent ones I can recall.

Robert Sean Leonard – Swing Kids and Dead Poets’ Society in the 90s. He plays Dr. Wilson in House!
Christian Bale – Swing Kids and American Psycho. Recently Batman Returns!
Noah Wyle – Swing Kids. He became more recognisable in ER, leading to guest starring in an episode of FRIENDS with George Clooney.
Jude Law – Gattaca. Quite recently in The Holiday and Closer.
River Phoenix – Young Indie in The Last Crusade. He passed away really young, unfortunately.
Christian Slater – Mobsters, Interview with the Vampire.
Ethan Hawke – White Fang, Dead Poets Society and Reality Bites. Recently, Training Day.

swingAs plainly seen, the main reason I thought about them is because I came across the movie “Swing Kids” that I have not seen for so long. I saw it play a mere one time on TV, and enjoyed it very much. It’s set in WWII, and tells the story of young men entangled in war, music, friendship, hatred, betrayal, and so much more. It has a somewhat strange and ‘baduy’ mix of swing dance and Nazi uniforms that can be a bit off-beat. The backdrop after all was extreme, with swing music being banned in Nazi Germany during the war. I recommend seeing it and judging it on one’s own. A word of caution though, if you are a watcher of WWII films, do not expect tone that is as in The Pianist and Schindler’s List, as this is a totally different frame of focus.

More musical blabber.

November 4th, 2007

It’s interesting how my ear catches a tune in the radio, and I have to find out who is singing, so I can get it playing on my own time. It’s very rare that you find out AFTER hearing the tune, so I try to catch a good length of lyrics so I can do a quick Google search. I love the internet.

After which I’d be able to find a copy online, and if I love the tune I’d hunt the album, then other works by the artist.

I thought I’d share some of my thoughts about my latest finds. Some songs mentioned here are uploaded in my Multiply site [if they're not there yet, i might put them up in the future].

The Cat Empire. This is an Australian alternative band from Melbourne. I’ve heard my friend Malu rave about them ever since I’ve known her. I happened too see them do an unplugged special on TV some weeks ago, and they are fantastic! They are kind of like a ska, swing, jazz rock band, heavily seasoned with Latin influence, in my opinion. I have all of their three albums now, and I like listening to them when I’m in need for a pick-me-up. My favorite would have to be the album So Many Nights.

Fat Freddy’s Drop. A New Zealand band I heard about from friend Shamin. They are great to hear to mellow out without getting droopy-eyed. [They had a gig last night here in Sydney, and was invited to come see it. But seeing I am feeling somewhat impoverished at the moment, no fancy events for me yet =P]

Damien Rice. First heard the song Delicate by this American singer, played in the House MD soundtrack. I have got to be enamored with the songs by Damien Rice the most at the present time. They are simply divine. I don’t know what it is, but even with not much instruments, the bravado just blows me away. I would have to say, I mostly play his song Cannonball to cheer myself up. Listen to it. It’s a great song.

Ralph Fiennes

July 16th, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Fiennes was reluctant to take the role of Lord Volemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). In a television interview on AMC’s “Sunday Morning Shootout” (2003) (November 20, 2005), he claimed to have been unimpressed with the previous three Harry Potter films. Fiennes was apparently nonplussed at the idea of appearing in the fourth film of a series and stated that he had “never bought into [the] world” of Harry Potter. Family members urged him to take the role while other friends counseled against it. He eventually changed his mind after Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell showed Fiennes preproduction conceptions of what the character of Voldemort might look like: “The little kid in me that likes to dress up and be bad went ‘Yeah! I want to do it!’”.

There is something about this man that is uber fascinating. His presence onscreen captivates, whether it’s a role of good guy or bad guy…

Voice Actor: Peter Cullen

April 30th, 2007

The wonders of cartoons are often the imagery and the characters, but what gives life most to the animated character is the voice.

optimus
It is fascinating how a cartoon character’s voice captures the viewer. Peter Cullen voices Optimus Prime in the Transformers cartoon, and it’s great to hear that he is also doing the voice for the now-completed movie. The original voice actor for Megatron isn’t doing it now though… I’m bummed I found out who is doing so instead and totally lost the mystery now. He’s quite a famous actor.

petercullenAnyway, back to Peter Cullen. It’s difficult to dig for photos of voice actors since they often are camery shy. There are some who dislike having their photos taken at all (like that woman doing the voices of Bart Simpson’s aunts). So I didn’t find a decent photo of him. But well, you can always look for yourselves.

Other characters he has voiced for are: Cindarr in “The Visionaries” and would you believe it.. Eeyore in “Winnie the Pooh”! Now thaaaaat is talent! I didn’t know this before but he also narrated for the Voltron Lions cartoon.
