Rivermaya @ Singapore

May 26th, 2009

I wasn’t very keen on watching Rivermaya here in Singapore when I heard that they were coming for a 2 night concert. Aside from the fact that the band is far from the old Rivermaya I knew, I am not following their music anymore. That being said, not seeing them is not that big deal for me. I can easily skip their concert with no feeling of regret.

So when Carol asked me to go with her to watch the concert for free, I was a bit hesistant because it is turning to be a long Saturday for me (Orchard Road shoot in the morning with PinoyCSers, Maan’s daughter 1st bday and the concert to wrap up the day). But then I gave in after I called Pen and asked if I can watch the concert.

The concert was great. The new faces are awesome and friendly. They sang the old Rivermaya classics and 2 or 3 songs from their new album.

Crowd was up on their feet dancing and singing along with the band. They had a solid set and shared smiles and laughs with the audience.

They were selling their latest CD at the venue but I have no money with me that night. Even if I wanted to buy one, I really can’t afford. :P

I may give it another try and listen to the new songs. I dunno, maybe I got tired of listening to Rico’s voice for the longest time. Since they have Jayson for their vocals, it maybe the new blood that the Rivermaya badly needs.

Influenza A H1N1

May 3rd, 2009

from WHO: Influenza A(H1N1) – update 10

2 May 2009 — The situation continues to evolve. As of 18:00 GMT+1, 2 May 2009, 16 countries have officially reported 658 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

Mexico has reported 397 confirmed human cases of infection, including 16 deaths. The higher number of cases from Mexico in the past 48 hours reflects ongoing testing of previously collected specimens. The United States Government has reported 160 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths – Austria (1), Canada (51), China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1), Costa Rica (1), Denmark (1), France (2), Germany (6), Israel (3), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (4), Republic of Korea (1), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (15).

Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

Today, Sunday morning, I woke up to the tail of the morning news while making coffee. The words I heard first were something about not finding a cure/vaccine for H1N1 until the end of the year. Now it usually takes me a few minutes to gather my senses together as I wake up from a late night, but that sobered me up in a jolt. That news snippet just put my June-July trip to Manila at risk. I went online then to check up on what’s going on so far.

A PhD Poem

May 1st, 2009

Cookies and chocolates are your favorite things
Unless they have raisins, they are disgusting
You love to debug, crack codes and make puzzle unravel
If only the rest of your life was so programmable

You’re quirky and independent and you never follow the herd
You’re a heroine to many and loved by hundred of nerds
So happy researching you cute little geek
Now get out of the lab, you’ve been there all week!
