Neverwhere and the joy of reading
penny April 26th, 2009
A post, to catch up on things. In my most previous post i had just been ranting about not having time to blog (among other things). Yet today, I sit in my bedroom gulping down coffee while waiting for the laundry to finish spinning.

The joy of reading. I’ve finally succumbed to reading the last few pages of Neverwhere. It has been a good quarter of a year since my last airplane ride when I had picked up (and finished reading) Fragile Things, a compilation of short stories of Neil Gaiman, from a bookshop in Changi airport. I’ve been hooked since.
The thing with reading for leisure, I’ve always found myself reading novels as quick as I could, to get to where the story wraps up, find out how it pans out. With Neil Gaiman (as I did with the Harry Potter series somewhat) it’s one of those situations where you wish a ride didn’t have to end. When the back cover of the book approaches, you feel sad as you realise every good thing has to end sometime.
That’s how it was for Neverwhere.
And apart from that, it has “sealed the deal” in a way, as I’ve got my Gaiman-reading lined up now:

As I’ve said, I’ve finished the “white book”, Fragile Things. Others in the pile are Coraline, Stardust, and the first volume of Sandman. The other nine volumes (Sandman) are locked safely away in my desk drawer in the university.
Neverwhere adaptations. As far as I’ve found out, Neverwhere the novel came about while Neil Gaiman had been writing it for the small screen as a BBC mini-series. I found this 2-DVD set and watched it last night. Here it is tucked between my boxsets of Tintin and Blackbooks.

It feels dated watching it, but after all it was out in 1996. Though, the BBC interview with Neil Gaiman talking about Neverwhere is worth the purchase.
Interesting news recently came out that a script has been written for Neverwhere to come out in the big screen.
More time please

Been delinquent with blogging, and I had a few ideas on what to write but never did. No excuses, just life.
One of the biggest woes I’ve had as of late is not having more time. Time to finish work, time to play, time to just relax with a movie or a book. What results is a little bit of time for each, and it usually leaves me unsatisfied with what I “accomplish”, or what I watch/read. Even sleep never feels enough.
Could it be all in the head? After all, if there is indeed not enough time to do anything, then how come things still get done anyway? Albeit late at times, things still fall into place at one point. If we look at things, no matter how much you worry about getting your work done on time, the world still continues to exist. Nothing exceptional, there is still life in the planet (though people die every minute, but that’s another matter.).
So what’s the point of worrying?
Still, presented with this argument (if we can call it one, which it doesn’t seem to be, but anyway) why do I still worry at all?
