Life expectancy
penny November 24th, 2007
Found this in Wikipedia. It’s like a heat chart for life expectancies. The redder, the shorter life expectancy is for individuals in that area. The greener, the longer.
It’s scary how Africa is screaming red in color. The Philippines is bright orange… implying the retiring age ’65′ leaves only a few years to enjoy retirement… Is this true?
Sigh, life is too short.
Academic genealogy

[edited on 24 November 2007, factual errors found. Typos still exist but I'm too lazy to change them =P I know Riemman should be Reimann!!]
I stalked my academic roots in the Math Genealogy Project, remembering a remark my supervisor (Tanaka) made when we were in Christchurch that it is possible to trace supervisors from him up to Euler and Gauss. The conversation came up when I met a few people (like M Palmer) from the Feldman Lab in Stanford in the Evolution conference.
I browsed the site and searched for my MS adviser (del Rosario) from UPD, and found the same was true for him! They coalesce [most recent common ancestor] at David Hilbert.

Jotting down notes.
penny November 22nd, 2007
Here’s an article that tells how writing down lists of worries (and blessings) can help out with your emotional state.
Ajay and I have been with the habit of making lists and writing things down. It’s both fun and rewarding, coz it gives you a visual of your thoughts, and it makes communication easier and clearer, hence understanding.
I tried for a while not keeping notes of what I do at work, and I realise I get lost quite often, and hence disappointed at myself. I’ve gone back to writing down notes at least to log what I had been doing, and it generates motivation on what I need to do next.
Pinoy Cool Shooters @ Sentosa
AJ Jorge November 21st, 2007
Last time Pen and me went to Sentosa (part 1, part 2 and part 3), we were on the tourist road. We obviously went to the tourist attractions and never actually bothered to step on the beaches.
When I went back there with the photography buddies, we stayed on the beach the whole time we were there. Even though it’s oredi (heh, that’s how it sounds when Singaporeans say it) November, people are still trekking the beach and having summer fun! There was even a concert/band event when we went there so there were more people than the usual.
Thanks to the guys from Pinoy Shooters for these picture set.

Pasko? Ano yun?
Any day, pwedeng umulan. Kahit na buhos talaga ang ulan, asahan mo after 2 hours, matatapos din yun at matutuyo ang kalsada in no time.
YPops and other mail issues.
penny November 16th, 2007
I found YPops, a nifty little application that allows me to sync my yahoomail to my client, AT LONG LAST. I have not known about this before, and always have to go to the YahooMail page. And it is a chore, I tell you. Since it is my oldest email address, and has accumulated tons of junk [hooray for mail filters], I don’t want to let go of it.
One thing I don’t like is I have to open two different Mail clients. It keeps things in order since I use two different internet connections, and I have to change outgoing mail servers each time if I use only one client. I have not found a workaround for this, and would appreciate suggestions.
Ugaling may pag-asa.

Sad and enraged… Jose Ma. Montelibano writes…
I’d like to know what our leaders are doing about poverty, about hunger — the president, the CEO, the bishop. I like to know how they can encourage our children to dream, to pursue their ambitions, to live out their greater destinies.
… In the depths of my own disappointment and impatient, I have time and again been lifted by a few heroes among us. Some work in government, some lead corporations, and some have red caps and the ring of Peter. Though not nearly enough in number to reverse the evil that dominates the landscape of our lives, they remind us that there is hope. All we have to do is be like them.

Remote consultation
penny November 15th, 2007
I remember explaining a maths topic in email before to a student. I realised later how ridiculous it is to do this. Brief replies are sufficient, and should it be called for, a meeting should be arranged. How really truly naive I had been.
Should I be in the same situation, I just can’t be bothered doing that anymore.
Jorge Cham seems to be documenting my life.
