NEC notebook computer on Windows Vista
penny September 8th, 2007
Getting a new laptop was part of the plan on my second visit to Singapore. Ajay helped me pick out a NEC Versa during COMEX, a sort of electronics fair that was held in Suntec.
The notebook has a 14.1 inch screen and quite fancy keypad. The touchpad lights up for media controls. There is an “eco” button that helps toggle power saving settings quickly. With much thought and considerations, we opted to have 2GB RAM and an Core2 duo processor.
Most distinctive difference is the Windows Vista OS. Man oh man, what challenges lay before me now.
Vista woes…
1. First of all, Palm software for Vista is still in Beta, so I am crudely transferring files by bluetooth, and not by wireless hotsync. It works, but it would be such a breeze if I had the Desktop software working the way I want it to.
2. Whenever Vista has something to ask the user, it blacks down its screen to let its question window dominate the display. This messes up whatever display settings I am running on for media. So if I was watching a movie with media player classic, it suddenly stops working.
3. The file manager [aka Windows Explorer] has changed its layout, though all the same ingredients are there. It has slowed me down on keyboard manuevering… but I’m slowly getting used to it.
4. Wooooo, MS Office 2007. This part, I am really angry about. All the menu items have shuffled around, and it takes me a while to find tools I need. I was forced to use Powerpoint 2007 some months ago, and I took hours to complete a task I am sure I would have finished in a half hour if I had done it in Office 2003. [shrug] Maybe I’ll get used to it. But then again, after the 60 day license I might roll back to 2003.
I might find more headaches while I continue using Vista. It does look better than XP. I just hope when I finish loading other essential programs they will work the way I want them to.

That NEC E6300 Versa is advertised today in the newspaper with a price of SGD1,999. We bought Pen’s unit cheaper than that with lots of freebies to go with it.
