i couldn’t help it, i just had to try. my first linux installation… one i did on my own. Pretty cool! (screenshot captured by gnome-panel. check out the name of my machine!)
it was really easy to do. all i needed was to free up some space and the dual boot with winxp works smoothly. it helps a lot to have google on your side. ‘course the installation still needs a bit of tweaking, but i think (i think….) i can get the hang of it now. next up is getting used to synaptic package manager. or better yet, get a feel for doing it in shell with apt-get. it’s not so easy as it looks. especially when it comes to mounting devices, and getting the network up and running. but with the help of some notes made while looking over people’s shoulders here, i was able to give my laptop a static ip address, and even gave it a name on the network. i can’t help feeling giddy with joy right now. i’m not fully free from my fear of linux, but i’m getting there. i had no trouble with ubuntu though, it easily detects the removable devices! this is a relief from all the knotted-up scsi-sdb business.
the measley 40GB HD now is a 50-50 hybrid of xp and ubuntu. apparently, long as you have a good chunk of contiguous free space, ubuntu is able to find its niche quite easily. ‘course it paid to have gparted (GNU partition editor, ready from the livecd Joy gave me… thanks so much Joy!) to cheat a little, and wipe out the two ntfs partitions into unallocated space.

pen,
you may want to read this:
mount ntfs and fat partion of windows from ubuntu.
oo, maski 2 gb ok na. 1 gb para sa /, 1 gb sa /home. 3 gb yung / ko, 15gb si /home. dual boot with winxp =)
cool! i’ll give that a go later =) if i can see my windows partition from ubuntu i’d have less need to reboot.
ubuntu version 6.06. there’s a newer one out now, though, you guys may want to check that out.
