Canberra.
penny October 7th, 2006
I went to visit Joy in Canberra last week, and here are some pictures. Joy was a terrific host
She took me around the city. I was only there for 24 hours (yes we counted, 4pm Sat to 4pm Sun) plus 6 hours total ride to and fro.
(pictures in link… not all with captions, I got lost in the editing I can’t tell which picture is which in the code anymore so I essentially gave up :P)
AJ: Lotsa images after the click. Sit back and enjoy the show (it may take some time to load).
Pen: ADDENDA: Credit to Joy who took most of the pictures with the birds and of course those shots with me in it!
If you look closely at the Mt Ainsle picture you’ll see some people taking pictures at the foreground, left– I heard them speak and they’re Pinoys. Hehe. Kodakan at lakwatsa. Sabi ni Joy libu-libo daw Pinoy doon, approx 4,000 out of 25,000 pop’n. tama ba Joy?)
Galleries. Joy took me first to see this gallery (whose name escapes me now) which was to be open not more than an hour more. I arrived in Canberra 4 p.m. and most places close by 5. At the moment this picture was taken we were the only two people in this section.

Boomerangs. In this gallery were mostly crafts representative of Australian “commonplace” art. The only decent photos I took were of these boomerangs and those “thingamajiggies” in the next photo.

Parliament. A view of parliament and that “spire” thing atop.

War Memorial backdropped by Mt Ainslie. This was taken near the parliament side of the lake pointing towards Mt Ainslie. The War memorial is that building seemingly at the foot of Mt Ainsle (where we watched the sun set beside Telstra Tower)

Captain Cook. All along I thought that Captain Cook was a real natural geyser. Stupid me. As if geysers can be anywhere near here. So here he is, Captain Cook, the water spewer.

War Memorial at night. When I see this photo I think.. Mosque? Dubai?

War Memorial.I laid the camera on the pavement near the middle of the road to take this picture, with the shutter set at 3 seconds (or was it 5?) and cars kept coming almost every time I tried to take the photo. Funnily enough, after I took this one, a policeman approached us from across the street. Joy and I thought we were in trouble, but it turned out he wanted to help us take a better photo from atop his truck which was parked dead center, perfectly aligned with the war memorial. I hoisted myself to the roof of his truck and took a shot. It didn’t turn out too well though, I liked this one better.

Telstra against sunset: view from Mt Ainsle Joy and I waited for the sun to sink behind the mountains for almost a half hour. It just won’t turn as orange as we’d hoped. After this we walked down a path on the side of the mountain (hill) towards the city. It was tiring but a lot of fun.

National Capital Presentation: “Mini-Canberra” We went to the exhibition of showing the history of Canberra.. how it was planned by architect Burley-Griffin. Here is a tabletop demonstration that was so cool, what with all the lights and images you can see on the board.

Lazing under the cherry blossom trees.

Other sights:
Walking along bridge towards parliament.

Joy and I. Chinese ceramic shoes on display at Floriade.

Perfectly aligned structures: From Mt Ainsle to the Parliament

moowa.
When I see the pink-flower tree (peach blossoms ba yun?, not sure) I think of Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Dreams’. hehe.
Oist Pen!
nice pictures Pen.
I mostly like ur shot in Capt. Cook.
the environment there seems to be good to you… you’re looking good
…the pics were all very good..maalam ka na talaga sa composition..what were your settings.. kuha ka rin low light, illusion of speed & motion, the B setting, night scene, high contrast(for B&W)…have you been conscious of your depth of field…
Nuong dumating ako e sabi nila’y “mainit ngayon” e nangangatog ako.
@dax: may mas magandang kuha nyan si Kapitan Cook makikita mo yung Carillon sa likod. Kaso di ko mahanap… Super symmetric ang Canberra!
@aj: Ang backpack mo ay kasalukuyang namamahinga. Madami pa yang lalakbayin.
@Papa: puro quick-taken ang shots dahil on the move kami ni Joy most of the time. Kadalasan P yan. Talk to you again sooN!
