Peyups Days
AJ Jorge July 24th, 2006

The lady in white blouse sitting on the couch’s armrest is Mimi and behind her is Karl – they are the gods of Peyups and honed their photography skills. Glenn and Gerald acting as a couple. The bald one behind is Markku; Jaemark is on his left; Erman completes the back row.
Sitting from the right is Vince and beside him is Finn (funny I just realized I don’t know her name IRL or maybe I just forgot – sorry). Pen would be in red blouse and I am in the shouting yellow polo bald headed guy in front.
House, M.D.

Everybody lies.
People lie for many reasons, but there’s always a reason.
You would’ve lied!
Yeah and you would’ve believed me!
Differential diagnosis… aaaaand go!
Two seasons out, impatient for the third. Ajay started me out watching this TV drama series starring funny Brit Hugh Laurie. Hilarious, I say! You’d think, is anyone really that obnoxious? Not to mention incredibly intuitive, surprisingly receptive and unrelentingly obsessive.
[***Thank you Ajay for the assistance in the information. I had to have my fiction-facts straight
mwah!]
Dr. Gregory House, infectious disease specialist and nephrologist, is head of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine in the Princeton Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. House is a brilliant diagnostician. What does a diagnostician do? Duh, he diagnoses. Often those medical cases whose causes are most mysterious and brain-racking; the evasive virus, the benign but troublesome tumor, the hiding bloodclot or the invisible bacteria. After all, puzzles are what drive him in his job. He would take risks on his patient’s health, be it spelling life or death, not necessarily out of hopeful hope, but because he has (or not even) statistics to back up his decisions, or maybe just because he says he knows he’s right. He is the administrative nightmare: incomplete documentation, red tape, extortion, even blackmail, harassment, breaking-and-entering (his patient’s homes, research for medical reasons) and assault!
He is supposedly world-reknowned in the medical field and is respected by his peers in a very queer way. If you’re a character in the story, you can’t really say you’d love him. He has a nastiness about him that repels the nicest of people; the witty quips are often insulting albeit charming in the weirdest sense. Why the cane? Watch and find out. It adds a vulnerability to the character; I think he would otherwise seem uninteresting if he was able to walk straight. Check out his shoes too. House’s clinic hours are comic relief!
House has 3 doctors to his bidding; Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) the lovely immunologist who cares about everyone and insists on always doing what is right; Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer) the dashing intensivist who loves his job and will do anything to keep it (for now); and Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps), the black car-thief neurologist, seemingly second-in command but why bother finding out when House always gets his way anyway.
Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) is hospital administrator. Her mantra seems to be “I hired House because he is great at what he does”. She is often the object of House’s snide sexual remarks. When I saw her in this show, I had to rummage through my videos for “As Good As It Gets” (starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt). Yes, she was there. The Jewish woman in the restaurant. Her face is soooo distinct.
House surprisingly has a confidante in the character of oncologist Dr. Wilson (what’s his first name?), played by Robert Sean Leonard. Yep, that guy from Dead Poet’s Society. Despite House’s neverending pokes at his supposed clandestine affairs with the nurses, Dr. Wilson remains a friend. For how long I wonder? Sela Ward appears as his ex-wife. You may remember her from the Harrison Ford blockbuster “the Fugitive” where she plays Dr. Kimble’s wife.
“House may be right.”
“House is right.”
“House was right.”
“House is always right.”
“Yes I am.”
I can’t say anything else about the show without sounding even more mediocre— when in fact it isn’t. Bryan Singer produces the TV show. Hugh Laurie (House) appeared in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. as that guy who sat beside Rachel in the plane to London; he was one of the puppy thugs 101 Dalmatians; he played a rich husband (Mr Smith I think?) in Sense and Sensibility.

Just when you thought everything is going according to plan, you get hit with a flu/colds a few hours before you wake up. And with that, all plans you made 3 weeks ago will literally go down the drain.
Pen and I were supposed to have a fun weekend but alas I was stuck at bed instead. Nursing my colds with biogesic and neozep while watching Dr. House pokes fun at his patients (during that time I was torn if I would like to be diagnosed by Dr. House or not) replaced the three weeks of planning. Save for the rain early Saturday morning, everything must have gone well have I not gotten sick. Everytime I look at the clock, I can picture myself with Pen doing what we must have been doing that day. What pains the most is that free times like that does not come easily nowadays.
I’m fine now for those curious enough to know my condition. And for the record, this is the first time I have filed a sick leave where I am actually sick. All other sick leaves are just your plain old laziness. If I am not mistaken, even at UP I have not excused myself from teaching because I am sick. I excuse myself from teaching because of some other reasons. I always pride myself of having a great health but when the flu virus hits you, you go down buster.
Lesson learned? Buy a DivX player so you can watch more DivX files.
Good Monday morning!

Ajay was sick over the weekend. Here’s to feeling better *raises coffee mug*
Doesn’t look like rain today. Thank goodness.
Hair.

I noticed some time back that periodically changing my shampoo brand radically improves its luster and texture. Maybe the “sawa” theory holds true for me. Yknow, where they say “papalit-palit ka dapat ng shampoo na ginagamit, para di magsawa at maglagas ang buhok mo”. I’ve not so often used palmolive shampoos, until two weeks ago I had no choice but to try out the “hair repair” brand I’ve seen KC endorsing. Smelled good and worked wonderfully. I bought a bottle yesterday. I used and liked it.
Every so often I come to a point when I cannot decide what to do with my head of hair. Early this year I had it cured at my cousin’s place, and it looked okay. For the longest time I feared cutting my hair too short; a trait I earned from spending a lot of time with a favorite aunt who had great tresses. I can cannot count beyond 3 the number of times I worn my hair really short.
Should I have them cut today?
It’s the first time in weeeeeeks that I’ve given this some serious thought, and here I am pondering this question online.
McFarlane’s Lost Figures
AJ Jorge July 12th, 2006
McFarlane Toys’ Lost Series 1 captures six fan-favorite characters from the series’ first season: Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley, Charlie and Shannon. Each 6-inch Lost figure will have a detailed base and photographic backdrop, capturing an episode-specific moment in the character’s story. In addition, each package will include a detailed prop reproduction central to the character’s story, enabling fans to “own” a piece of the show’s mythology.
Hmmmm… it’s been awhile since we last bought a toy. Maybe we’ll get a figure from this set.
Twee-dee-dee-dum.

So what did I miss, aside from all the movie-watching?
Ganda pala yun.
You see, I made this list of movies I want to see that time piracy wasn’t so rampant here in da country, with the intention of asking my father to find copies in Brunei back in year 1999. It’s really sweet of Ajay to start doing that (about 2/3 weeks ago). Among those he already found are: Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski, Fisher King,…
Andaming naka-line-up the next weekends, parang malulunod ako ah.
You can’t serve two masters at the same time. When I was not able to prepare or organize lessons for a day, I just wing it!
E di syempre lahok dito and E’Heads at Rivermaya. Maski SideA at SouthBorder e napapatulan ko. Nostalgia baga.
May mga magddonte ba dyan ng mp3s? Pahingi naman ng kopya.

And Math17 Haunts Me
AJ Jorge July 6th, 2006
I knew a day would come when a former student of mine (a cute chick sana) will greet me somewhere and recall our class sessions. There has been actually numerous occasions where I met my former students but they just offered a simple wave or “Hi Sir!“.
Well yesterday was a bit surreal because we met in a strange place – men’s comfort room. I know, I know, it’s weird. Continue Reading »
