RSS Feeds

July 29th, 2005

I have a couple of entries regarding RSS feeds from the my previous blog site. I can’t express enough how wonderful RSS feeds are. They keep me updated with the daily happenings that I would want to know. My previous entries were:

Currently I have comic strips feeds

Techie stuff

NBA News

Blogs

ATOM feeds (I used Mozilla Thunderbird for ATOM)

I’m currently looking for an Archie comic strip feeds and another Garfield feed. My current Garfield feed doesn’t work anymore. I used to have a CNN and BBC feeds but I rarely read the articles (and the top stories then usually headlines the IRAQ war and US news so I gave up on them).

The biggest bulk of feeds comes from Digg. Surprisingly, even if Digg just started about a month ago, it is feeding me about 40-50 feeds a day! And tech news from here is always fresh and good.

101 things you can do with firefox

July 28th, 2005

This is another Firefox vs. IE list.

Hopefully, I can convert all of you to use Firefox instead. Hehe
(list is shamelessly ripped from this site)

  1. Tabbed browsing

Lets you display more than one site in a window using multiple tabs. You can
open a new tab by selecting Navigator Tab from the New submenu of the File
menu (or press Ctrl+T). You can also open a link in a new tab by using
the right-click menu. You will find configuration options in the Tabbed
    Browsing preferences panel.

Note that CrazyBrowser is a different product than IE.

  2. Popup blocking

Block all those popup ads. To disable popup windows, select Advanced and then
Scripts & Plugins from the Preferences window. Then uncheck the box that
    reads “Open unrequested windows”.

  3. Prevent scripts from doing various things

You can prevent scripts from moving windows, closing them, changing the status
bar and setting cookies. To change these settings, select Advanced and then
Scripts & Plugins from the Preferences window. Then uncheck the desired boxes.

Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor

July 28th, 2005

At first I wasn’t sure when Kevin Spacey was cast as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman movie. But when I saw a picture of him in the set and filming the movie, Kevin Spacey hits the spot!

Theme Layout

July 26th, 2005

As I have not been using IE as my main browser anymore, I didn’t know that my theme is fuxored when using IE.
If you?re reading this entry via IE, chance are the sidebar is waay down there (after the last entry). I still can?t figure this out ? this also happens with Pen?s page. Aaargh. IE you are one lousy software.

So IE users, if you shall stick with your lousy browser please bear with this broken layout. I haven?t got much time to fix this yet. Better yet, how about considering Mozilla Firefox as your primary browser?

DVDs Last Weekend

July 20th, 2005

I was able to watch a couple of films last weekend. Here’s my list:

  • Van Wilder. Finally I was able to watch this film. I have been hunting a copy of this ever since Anthony sent me a VHS copy of this movie. Well, we don’t have a VHS player at home so the copy is still still until now. I was intrigued by this movie since it stars Ryan Reynolds which Anthony and I know from the short-lived comedy series ‘Two Guys, Girl and a Pizza Place’. Ryan Reynolds also stars in Blade Trinity. Van Wilder is a fun movie. One of those no-brainer comedy flicks.
  • Hitch. Kung wala lang GF si Gerald, highly recommended ‘to sa kanya. You’ll learn the moves in this movie. Not a pa-kilig movie but more on doing the right thing at the right time with the right person. ;)
  • Madagascar. 3D animation. Not that great. It will kill some time though. Chris Rock’s voice is very prominent in the whole movie while that of David Schwimmer is not. Story is okay but it lacks substance for me. I’m now looking for Racing Stripes copy to make a comparison between the two.
  • Last last week’s flicks:

  • Stand by me. A ’90′s movie starring River Phoenix, Jerry O’Connel, Keifer Sutherland. Nice drama movie about young boys’ adventure and friendship. It’s nice but I don’t think I can watch it again. Not in the near future anyway.
  • Fight Club. ‘stig. Nice twist in the story. Definitely would watch it again.
  • New Police Story. Jacky Chan. ‘Nuff said.

I still have a lot to catch up with the growing lists of DVD title we have at home.

At UP Math Building

July 19th, 2005

We at the Math Building

This photo was taken Sept 27, ’98. Obviously, Pen and I are still skinny then. Hehe.

3rd year college right? If I am not mistaken this was taken after an MMC activity, I just can’t recall what it is.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

July 18th, 2005

harry potter 6As you may have known, after 12 hours of the book’s release, e-books of it are already spawning in the internet world. And after 2 days of, I finally have a copy. I spent a total of 2-3 hours of searching where to get a copy. When I found one, I couldn’t finish the download because of my crappy dial-up connection at home. So I have to wait a full day to get my copy in the office. And yes folks, I already have one. Hehe.

I already have a pdf copy in my drive. I know Pen and Jie can upload it in their PDA and cellphones respectively but I doubt that they will do that. Pen got her hardbound copy last Saturday morning at Powerbooks Glorietta. And I know Jie is too lazy to read e-books from his game and watch phone. As for me, I just have another option what to do with my idle time in the office.

It’s a 827 page e-book. I don’t know if it has the same number of pages as that of the book itself.

And it makes me wonder, how to these people make an e-book anyway? Do they scan it or they type it manually?

New Comics!!

July 16th, 2005

Finally! All-Star Batman and Robin came! Jim Lee draws and Frank Miller writes!

For the uninformed, Lee and Miller are 2 top famous artists in the comicdom. Been waiting for this series to start since DC announced that they will team up.

Batman and RobinWritten by Frank Miller; Art and cover by Jim Lee and Scott Williams

The all-new saga of Batman and Robin begins here! The people responsible for some of comicdom’s greatest tales, Frank Miller (BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, Sin City) and Jim Lee (BATMAN: HUSH) team up for the first time to bring you Batman and Robin like you’ve never seen them before in this imaginative reinvention of these classic characters that will have your eyes popping and your head spinning!
All hell breaks loose at the circus as millionaire Bruce Wayne and gal pal Vicki Vale witness a young boy’s life shattered before their eyes. Orphaned, Dick Grayson has nowhere to go and no one to turn to ? no one but Bruce Wayne and the shadow of the bat!
Expect action, adventure, guest-stars and the unexpected as Miller and Lee deliver the ultimate tales of the Dynamic Duo!

I bought 2 copies at Filbar’s – 1 has Batman on the cover while the other has little Robin on the cover. Collector’s copy. Hehe. This series is a retelling of how Batman adopted Robin. Fresh from the smash hit movie Batman Begins, DC set up the stage so that fans can sort of follow what happened after the movie. In this maiden issue, Bruce Wayne is already Batman and he saw how Dick Grayson’s (Robin) parents died and why he adopted Dick into his household. As usual, Jim Lee’s drawing is astounding. I’m still in awe when looking at his works.

What’s more, Pen was feeling generous when I bought the 2 comics. No, she didn’t paid for it. She bought me the softcover compilation of Kingdom Come! This is another compilation I have been eyeing to buy. The other one was the Superman For All Seasons which I already bought some few weeks back. Galing ng storya nito kahit elseworld siya – meaning out of continuity ng superheroes. Think of “what will happen to the superheroes after 10-20 years time”. This is basically the premise of the whole compilation.

Kingdom ComeWritten by Mark Waid; Art by Alex Ross

Set just after the dawn of the 21st Century in a world spinning inexorably out of control comes this grim tale of youth versus experience, tradition versus change and what defines a hero. KINGDOM COME is a riveting story pitting the old guard ? Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and their peers ? against a new uncompromising generation and ultimately in the final war against each other to determine nothing less than the future of the planet.

You should have seen me after buying the comics. Ang laki ng ngiti ko. Para akong bata na binigyan ng maraming kendi. I always feel a different kind of satisfaction and joy whenever I buy new comics. Even though my wallet hurts after buying ‘em, I know that I will enjoy them more than buying t-shirts/pants/etc (which I badly need).

And now before I sleep, I want you guys to know (yes, the 5 of you reading this) that I am a proud owner of two All-Star Batman and Robin #1 and 1 TPB of Kingdom Come.

Monitor is dying

July 14th, 2005

I hate to say goddbye to my monitor at home. It is a 19″ NEC monitor. It’s been erratic since last sunday and the whole screen would turn reddish for no apparent reason.

Pen and I bought that monitor when we were still in UP. We bought it from PCExpress along Katipunan. It was huge. The boxed monitor can’t even fit it in the trunk of the taxi nor in the passenger seat so we had to take it out of the box and put the monitor inside the cab.

We used to watch anime and movies at the faculty room with it. We even used it when we played PS2 there via a capture card. Doing spreadsheets with a big monitor helps a lot. Less scrolling and you can see more cells. Your desktops will be cleaner even if you have lots of icons. There’s a lot of free space with a huge desktop.

I tried switching the monitor cables with the others I have at home to no avail. Sometimes the monitor is OK but more often, the red hue would show up. I can’t design this page at home as the colors would be flakey. Can’t even surf properly because of the irritating colors.

Anyway, buying another big monitor would cost me much. So I’ll just resort to the next best option – TipidPC.com. They are an online reselling of PC parts. The site doesn’t do the selling but the registered members. I personally know the site owners and have met them in person. Pen was able to buy her PS1 and PS2 there. I was able to buy 2 HDD’s there. So far, all transactions went fine. I’m already eyeing for a 17″ flat monitor worth 2.5k. Hope the deal will prosper.
